Marc Brooker wrote an informative post on hobbies[bookerFourHobbiesApparent2023] where he offered that a hobby actually breaks into four sub-hobbies:
- Doing the thing
- Collecting gear for the thing
- Talking about gear for the thing
- Talking about the thing
This is important because it leads to two conclusions:
- Those who talk about a hobby may not be the person who is best at the hobby
- Similary, those with the best guard or setup, may not necessarily be the best at the hobby
