When a leader or your manager gives you a task, give them the benefit of the doubt that they have a good reason for it, even if you do not understand it. They may not even have a clearly articulated reason for it in their own mind, and it might be much more based on intuition. You can use this as an opportunity to ask what problem they are trying to solve, then reason about what the strategy is and how this request fits into it. Ask clarifying questions where you have gaps in understanding. When you feel like you have the picture, play it back to them. At this point they may correct it, or it may uncover some issue neither of you expected. Either way you will have a clearer understanding of the strategy and will be working to solve problems on their level1.
